I imagined The Collaborative for the Research on Black Women and Girls many years before it became real. And to watch it become real is truly magical. I was drawn to this project in part because of my professional life but more importantly because of my commitment to telling the stories of Black femmes, girls, and women.

Currently, I’m chair and professor of the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department at Wake Forest University My interdisciplinary research focuses on Diasporic Black women. My scholarly work spans various manuscripts, including the award-winning book Black Women, Cultural Images and Social PolicyShadow Bodies: Black Women, Ideology, Representation, and Politics, Erotic Testimonies. I have authored several edited volumes, such as Black Girl Magic Beyond the Hashtag, Black Women and da 'Rona, and Lavender Fields.

I have also ventured into the realm of poetry with the chapbook Eat the Meat & Spit Out the Bones and documentary filmmaking with Healing Roots. Currently, I am engrossed in a digital project exploring the intersection of Black women and COVID-19.

Most importantly, I’m a Black, immigrant, mother, and woman who is simply trying to tell the stories of Black women as I honor the ancestors who direct my actions.
