“We Won’t Stop!”

Virtual Writing Workshop
September 25-26 AND October 9-10, 2020

This is an opportunity for you, self-identified Black femmes, girls and women, to not only write in community, but to receive constructive feedback on your writing projects.

The Black Women and Girls Symposium is an initiative of The Collaborative for the Research on Black women and Girls. The Collaborative is a multidisciplinary research group that centers the experiences of Black femmes, girls, and women. It is interested in exploring the diverse lived realities of Black femmes, girls and women across varied geographical and social locations. The purpose of the group is to explore the ways in which Black womanhood and girlhood intersects and interacts with other social categories such as nationality, religion, class, sexuality, etc. The Collaborative also seeks to support scholars, understood in its widest sense, who engage in research on Black femmes, girls and women, and develop practical ways to bring the knowledges of Black femmes, girls and women into the classroom and other critical spaces.  
 
We invite a cohort of 10 writers to join us. If you are working on: A grant; A book proposal; A chapter; A short story; An article ….
The workshop is designed to:
  • Nurture Black femmes, girls and women’s writing voices through the use of Black feminist/womanist holistic approaches to writing.
  • Allow us to address the joys and pains of writings while being in community.
  • Disrupt the narrative that writing happens in isolation.
What we will do:
  • We will work independently and in small groups that are designed to offer feedback on your project.
  • Each individual will submit a piece, no more than 20 pages, at least a week prior to the start of the workshop. This will be shared with your organized group. Members of the individual groups will provide guided feedback and you will have time to respond
  • Then we will write in 25 minutes blocks of time.
  • At the end of each day we will gather to celebrate our writing efforts. 
What you have to do:
  • Fill out the application.
  • Be able to attend both sessions in September and October, and be able to check in monthly after that.
  • And, more importantly, celebrate that you won’t stop writing.
